Week One – Fly Fishing Basics (e.g., gear, rods, reels, lines, clothing, knots)
• Introduction to using a fly fishing rod
• The equipment
• The types of fishing line
• River manners (i.e., the unwritten rules of fly-fishing)
• Buying your first fly fishing rod

Week Two – Casting Methods
• Basic fishing knots
• Basic water flow and chemistry that promote good fish reproduction
• Entomology (i.e., what do trout eat and why)

• Spotting & stalking trout (i.e., finding the trout/what to do)
• Fighting & landing trout (i.e., get the trout on the hook & on the bank)
• Releasing the trout safely, if you want to let it go

• Basic materials
• Types of hooks
• Basic flies

Week Five
• Find a fly you want to make and we will make it
• How to find new fly patterns
• Local rivers and trout fishing areas

Week Six – Dry Flies
• Basic tying material
• Introduction to hooks
• Basic fly tying

• Line management (i.e., controlling your line to achieve a ‘natural drift’)
• Basic casting (i.e., learn casting techniques & when to use them)
• Fly selection (i.e., what fly to use and when)
• Visit a local fishing area to try out flies

Week Eight
• Day fishing on the Elk River
• Local fish farming
• Visiting a fly fishing store
Each week will include tying a number of different flies and how to fish them.
