The President’s Climate Commitment

Bridgemont Community and Technical College President, Dr. Jo Harris, is one of over 650 college presidents who signed the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment document.  The complete text of the commitment can be found at http://www.presidentsclimatecommitment.org.

Through education and modeling best practices, the Bridgemont community is dedicated to making a difference in addressing climate change.  With this commitment, the institution has established a Sustainability Council that leads nine groups, or OPPS teams, in activities that make a difference on the campus.  The Bridgemont Sustainability Institute was created to promote dialog and share information among education, economic development and government agencies, non-profits, and regional business leaders. Implementation of Sustainable Practices is one of the five strategic priorities for the institution, with activities outlined to address short-, medium, and long-term economic, health, social, and environmental benefits for employees, students, and the greater community.  Greening across the curriculum is a major priority; purchasing and renovation guidelines have been developed. Mechanisms are in place to track and report progress to the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) on the many activities supporting this commitment.
